A pre-wash program lasts about 20 minutes and does exactly what the name suggests: it pre-washes the laundry with cold water before the "real" washing program starts.
The pre-wash is only necessary if the laundry is really very dirty. However, the vast majority of detergents can also get rid of stains without prewashing.
