In the case of biodegradability, substances are examined for the property of how they can be decomposed by microorganisms. The test procedures are based on the OECD guidelines (Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development).
The tests of the OECD test series 301 (A-F) demonstrate rapid and complete biodegradation under aerobic conditions. Different test methods are available for readily or poorly soluble as well as for volatile substances.
Based on these guidelines, products are classified as readily biodegradable if they degrade more than 70% within 28 days and 10% within the first 10 days.
